Kingston councillor suspended, reported to police over alleged assault

Conservative councillor Rowena Bass, the leader of the Conservative Group on Kingston Council, has been suspended and reported to the police after she allegedly assaulted her election agent, leaving his face bruised.

Incident at East Sheen office

The alleged assault occurred following a verbal confrontation at a Conservative office in East Sheen. According to an email from the Richmond Park and North Kingston Conservative Association, the matter “has been reported to the police and remains under investigation,” as reported by LBC.

A weekly newsletter sent to Conservative members reiterated the party’s “zero-tolerance policy towards abuse, intimidation or threatening behaviour directed at staff or volunteers” in light of the “assault of our Association Manager.”

Bass’s political background

Councillor Bass has represented the Coombe Hill ward since 2014. She stood as the Conservative parliamentary candidate in Bootle at the last general election, finishing fourth with 4.3 per cent of the vote.

Party response

A Conservative Party spokesman confirmed: “Cllr Rowena Bass has been suspended from the Conservative Party pending investigation into these allegations. This process is rightly confidential and we will not be commenting further.”

The Standard has also contacted Cllr Bass and the Metropolitan Police for comment.
