Huge fire breaks out at old bank in Tredegar

Fire crews were called to a major fire at the site of a former bank in Tredegar on Sunday afternoon.

Blaze spreads to multiple floors

The fire broke out at the old Midland bank on Commercial Street, with crews tackling the blaze for several hours as it spread to multiple floors.

Videos shared online showed thick black smoke rising from the top of the building, visible across the town. At around 7.30pm, fire crews remained at the scene damping down hot spots.

Emergency response

A South Wales Fire and Rescue Service spokesperson said: "At 16:19hrs today we received multiple calls to reports of a three-storey building on fire in the former Midland bank building on Commercial Street in Tredegar."

"On arrival, crews were faced with a well-developed building fire on the second floor and roof space of the property."

"At the height of the incident six pumping appliances, a water bowser, rescue tender and an aerial ladder platform were in attendance."

"The fire was extinguished by crews with hoses, wearing breathing apparatus. Crews remain at the scene damping down hot spots."
