Two people, including a Northumbria Police officer, were taken to hospital after a five-vehicle collision in Howdon, North Tyneside. Both have since been discharged after receiving treatment for minor injuries.
Shortly before 9.15am on Wednesday, officers responded to a report of a collision involving a police car on Tynemouth Road. The driver of the marked police car was responding to an incident on blue lights when it collided with a grey Vauxhall Mokka and three other parked vehicles.
Emergency response and road closure
A major emergency response was sparked, bringing the street to a standstill with firefighters, ambulance crews and police in attendance. The road was taped off for a couple of hours, with three fire engines initially blocking the road.
Police officers conducted inquiries, and two recovery vehicles arrived before the police car and other damaged cars were recovered. The North East Ambulance Service dispatched two double-crewed ambulances, a duty officer and two vehicles from the Hazardous Area Response Team.
Hospital treatment and appeal for footage
Two people were taken to Northumbria Specialist Emergency Care Hospital: the police officer and an occupant of one of the stationary vehicles. Both have since been discharged.
Inspector Sarah Munnelly, of Northumbria Police, said: “We are carrying out a full investigation into the circumstances of the collision and ask that anyone with dash cam or information should send Northumbria Police a direct message on social media or use the live chat and report forms on the Force’s website.”
