Houthi militants have reportedly fired ballistic missiles and drones at Saudi Arabian oil facilities and an air base. A drone was shot down in the overnight attack over Khamis Mushait at such a low altitude that the interception shattered windows, according to reports.
Attack on Khamis Mushait
Footage circulating on social media reportedly shows the intercept happening above the buildings of the southwestern Saudi city. Khamis Mushait is home to King Khalid Air Base, where much of the Middle Eastern kingdom's fighter fleet is located.
The city has been a Houthi target for years because of the base. A video shows smoke and balls of fire rising from trucks at a camp of the Saudi-backed government forces.
Alleged Saudi strike on prison
The attack comes after Yemen's Houthi rebels said Saudi Arabia carried out an air strike on a prison killing seven people, including a child. The strike on the Central Corrective Facility in al-Jawf province also wounded at least seven people, Anees al-Asbahi, a spokesperson for the Houthi-run Health Ministry, said on Monday.
Al Masirah TV channel, run by the Houthis, showed footage of the aftermath of the alleged attack. A collapsed building and people searching through the rubble can be seen. Saudi Arabia has not commented on the allegations.
Background of the conflict
Yemen plunged into civil war in 2014 when the Houthis descended from their northern stronghold and seized the capital, Sanaa, forcing the internationally recognized government to flee southward, then into exile in Saudi Arabia. A Saudi-led coalition entered the Yemen war the following year in an attempt to restore the government.
