Caio Arrabal, 44, fell approximately 492 feet to his death from the Pedra do Macaco trail in Marica, Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, on Sunday after posing for a victory photo at the summit. A female hiker recorded the moment as Arrabal positioned himself in a narrow gap of the large rock formation before attempting to descend.
Details of the Incident
According to witnesses, Arrabal had just taken a photo at the top of the cliff when he began making his way down. He turned his body to face the woman recording him, but as he attempted a maneuver near the cliff edge, he lost his footing and fell. Emergency crews were called at approximately 11:40 a.m., launching a search operation. Rescue teams took about four hours to reach the location, using ropes and air support due to limited access in the area.
Rescue Efforts
Rescue instructor Matheus Moura described the recovery effort as complex, stating, "We had to go in through a densely wooded area with extremely difficult access to reach him. We had to climb, ascend using ropes and carry out several procedures before getting to the site." Officials noted that the trail lacks warning signs along the route.
Previous Tragedy in the Area
This incident marks the second tragedy in the Marica area in two weeks. On June 14, Rosemary Garcia, 59, fell from a clip at a zip-line park at Gruta do Spar (Spar Cave). She was part of a group of 15 people rappelling inside the cave, a popular spot for thrill seekers. Witnesses said she was wearing safety gear, including a helmet and gloves, when she fell while lifting a leg to apply insect repellent. A guide attempted to grab her but could not prevent the fall from approximately 98 feet.
