A 32-year-old man in Madhya Pradesh, India, has accused his new wife of being a transgender woman after a relative spotted her shaving. The couple entered an arranged marriage on June 29, but the groom grew suspicious when the bride allegedly made excuses to avoid consummating the marriage, citing her period on the wedding night and stomach pain the following day.
Police investigation launched
The Kotwali police in Pachore opened a case against five members of the bride's family on July 25, according to The Times of India. The groom's family claims they were rushed into the wedding after a neighbour introduced the couple. They had hoped to wait a year before the marriage, but the bride's family insisted on an early date.
According to reports, the groom, a vegetable seller, and his family spent approximately £428,000 (Rs 5 lakh) on the wedding at a Hindu temple.
Shaving incident triggered suspicion
The suspicions began after the groom's sister-in-law saw the bride shaving. The bride had just returned from a three-week stay with her family. On July 23, a day after her return, the groom's family asked her relatives to take her back. When the bride's relatives arrived, they allegedly attacked and verbally abused the groom's relatives.
Kotwali police chief Santosh Baghela stated that whether the woman is transgender would only be confirmed by a medical examination.
