Two police officers were attacked by a crowd of Besiktas ultras in Glasgow on Wednesday night, with bottles thrown and one officer knocked to the ground, ahead of Celtic's Europa League match.
Officers were called to a disturbance on Sauchiehall Street at 9.15pm on Wednesday, 4 November 2026. Football supporters dressed in black clothing lobbed bottles at the officers during the incident.
Neither officer required medical treatment. Besiktas were due to face Celtic at Parkhead on Thursday evening.
Disturbance on Sauchiehall Street
Footage from earlier in the evening showed dozens of Besiktas supporters dressed in black clothing on Sauchiehall Lane, near Malone's Irish bar. Another clip showed a crowd of fans being escorted through the city centre by police before they were kettled on Bath Street.
Police Scotland has launched an investigation into the disorder.
Police Scotland statement
Chief Superintendent David Robertson said: "Around 9.15pm on Wednesday, 4 November, 2026, we received a report of a disturbance involving a large group of men on Sauchiehall Street, Glasgow. Two officers on patrol were attacked during the incident, with bottles being thrown and one knocked to the ground.
"They did not require medical treatment. This violence is unacceptable and will not be tolerated, being assaulted is not part of the job. Our inquiries are ongoing."
Celtic are set to face the 18-time Turkish Super Lig champions in the Europa League this evening. The incident follows violent scenes surrounding the League Cup at the weekend, when thousands of fans descended on Hampden Park for semi-final fixtures between Aberdeen and Rangers, and Hibs and Hearts. Officers were assaulted, struck by fireworks and glass bottles, and fans were also assaulted.
