Four-year-old Javeayah Harris is now presumed dead after her parents were charged in connection with her death. A massive search and rescue operation was launched when she was reported missing, but authorities now believe she had already died at least a month before the 911 call was made on June 30.
Charges Filed Against Parents
Her father, Johmarea Harris, 23, has been charged with homicide by child abuse. Her mother, Michilae Herring, 22, faces the same charge along with filing a false police report. Both are currently in custody as police continue to search for the child's body.
Aiken County Sheriff Marty Sawyer Jr. said: “Sadly, it was already too late to save her the moment the 911 call came in.” Court documents reveal that both parents allegedly admitted the child had died, though her remains have not yet been located.
Massive Search Effort
The initial search covered more than 3,000 acres, involving helicopters, drones, K-9 teams, and hundreds of law enforcement personnel and volunteers. The effort has now shifted from a rescue operation to a homicide investigation.
Authorities have not ruled out additional charges as the investigation continues. Sheriff Sawyer thanked the agencies and volunteers who assisted and offered condolences to Javeayah’s extended family. He vowed: “Our search for Javeayah drives on. It is still extremely important that we bring her home.”
Community Response
Heartbroken locals have left flowers, teddy bears, and balloons outside the family’s home. Hundreds of volunteers joined the search, with one resident saying: “She captured our hearts.” Authorities previously described Javeayah as a bright and talkative little girl who loved Minnie Mouse and chasing chickens.
