GB News presenter Lizzie Cundy criticised Prince Harry and Meghan Markle live on air following the couple's return to the UK, saying "the American Dream is officially over" and questioning their appeal for taxpayer-funded security.
On Wednesday (August 26), the Duke and Duchess of Sussex returned to Britain for the first time in six years, reportedly arriving at Birmingham airport via a private jet. It is understood that the parents are enrolling their children, Prince Archie, seven, and Princess Lilibet, five, into school in the Cotswolds, close to the family's new home, next week.
Broadcaster's On-Air Criticism
On Saturday night (August 29), broadcaster Lizzie Cundy returned to the airwaves, where she shared her thoughts on the Sussexes' arrival in the UK. The TV personality did not mince her words as she hit out at the royal couple following Harry's recent attempt to be granted taxpayer-funded security after moving back to Britain.
She fumed: "Well, yes, folks, they're back. The American dream is officially over. Meghan and Harry are back in Blighty. Yes, they flew on a private jet. Those eco warriors that we've known and loved - they're back. And guess what? They want us to pay for it."
Security and Spending Concerns
She continued: "They want us to stump up £5million for their security. Is this the same couple that couldn't bear this nation? Did every interview slating us, slating the Royal Family? But now they want to come back, and they want us to pay for it."
Cundy also referenced Harry's memoir, saying: "And don't you forget, remember his book Spare, or should I say Spare US, who wrote about killing 25 Taliban. Now, that puts Harry in huge danger, puts the Royal Family in danger, and us as a nation in danger. Yet they expect us to pay for it."
The broadcaster went on to suggest ways the couple could save money to invest in a private security firm during their time in the UK. She suggested: "I've got an idea how we can wipe this out. I've just come back from the Cotswolds, and they're looking at an £8million pad in the Cotswolds. But I found one for under £3million. That way, they can pay for their own security. How's about that?"
Public Reaction and Security Appeal
It did not take long for viewers to flock to social media to share their thoughts online, with one user penning: "Lizzie's got a point. They keep saying one thing and doing another. If they wanted privacy, maybe stop with the constant announcements."
Another agreed: "Finally, someone with a brain at GB News. Harry and Meghan are nothing more than grifters." A third chimed in with: "The grifters are not welcome."
It comes after Prince Harry appealed to Home Secretary Shabana Mahmood, asking for a renewed assessment of his security situation following the terror threat against his family. A long-awaited risk assessment, carried out on the orders of the Royal and VIP Executive Committee (Ravec), took place at the end of July. Harry then informed officials of his intention to travel back to the UK, where the family are said to be on an "extended" stay. The Home Secretary has not made a decision on whether to change the Sussexes' right to security from the ad-hoc arrangement in place since they left their royal roles in 2020.
