Fruit Flies Gone for Good: Pour Boiling Water Down Drain, Not Vinegar
Fruit Flies Gone: Pour Boiling Water Down Drain

Fruit flies can be eliminated permanently by pouring boiling water down the drain, according to experts from Which?. This method kills eggs and larvae that survive normal water flow, targeting the source of infestations.

Why Boiling Water Works

The British Pest Control Association advises that fruit flies lay eggs in damp areas like drains. Boiling water destroys these eggs and larvae, breaking the breeding cycle. The experts said: "Pour boiling water down the plughole to kill fruit fly eggs and larvae, which can usually survive typical water flow." They also recommend flushing the kitchen sink before going on holiday to remove residues that attract flies.

Additional Prevention Tips

To make your home less appealing, empty food waste bins regularly and keep lids tightly closed. The experts added: "Close it while you're peeling veg rather than leaving it open for flies to enter and lay their eggs. Clean under the rim of the lid, too, as eggs and larvae might be lurking there. Wash kitchen and bathroom bins regularly." Dry sponges, mops, and cloths thoroughly to remove dampness that attracts fruit flies.

Are Fruit Flies Dangerous?

While generally a nuisance, fruit flies can carry bacteria like salmonella, E. coli, and listeria, transferring them to food and surfaces. Pest UK warns this poses a food poisoning risk. However, with proper drain cleaning and hygiene, infestations can be prevented.
