French mayor teargassed shielding student protesters in Paris

The mayor of Saint-Denis, Bally Bagayoko, had to be evacuated from a protest in Paris on Tuesday after he was teargassed by police. He was marching with high-school students when they were confronted by a police cordon in the French capital.

Mayor condemns 'disproportionate' force

Speaking to the Guardian, Bagayoko said the 'small minority' of people using protests as an opportunity to create trouble did not 'justify the disproportionate use of force by the authorities'. His comments come as French police have suspended the use of stun grenades at school protests, while a minister rejected accusations of brutality.

Nationwide student demonstrations continue

Students across France have been protesting about the lack of funding and resources in public establishments for more than a week. More than 5,000 people have been arrested, a large majority of them underaged.
