Chaos erupted on the streets of several major French cities as police and protesters clashed, with barricades set ablaze to block traffic in unsanctioned marches.
Violence before marches
Before the official marches started, violence broke out in Paris, Marseille and Lyon, where protesters staging unsanctioned demonstrations set up barricades, often on fire, to block traffic.
Police reportedly fired tear gas at the crowds, according to reports from the scene.
Protesters and students unite
Hundreds of thousands of people were expected to take to the streets across France on Saturday, as protesters marching against rising living costs joined groups of high school students who have been protesting education conditions for more than three weeks.
The Saturday mobilisation followed calls on social media to revive the yellow vest movement, which first emerged in 2018.
