Investigation Triggered by School District

The Ocean Springs School District (OSSD) alerted police on June 20 after being tipped off about potential inappropriate behavior involving an employee. The district immediately notified the Ocean Springs Police Department and Mississippi Child Protective Services. OSSD stated it has been working closely with law enforcement throughout the investigation.

Court Appearance and Bond

Smith appeared at the Jackson County Circuit Court on Thursday for a hearing. Following the hearing, she was arrested and charged. Circuit Court Judge Calvin Taylor set Smith's bond at $50,000 for each charge.

School District Response

School bosses expressed they were 'deeply saddened' by the news but confirmed full cooperation with the police. In a statement, OSSD said: 'We want to reassure parents, students, and staff that we are addressing this matter with seriousness and diligence. OSSD will continue to work with investigators and assist them in any way possible. The safety of our students and staff members remains our highest priority.'

Smith was named 'Teacher of the Year' in 2022 before becoming an assistant principal. She is currently behind bars following the police investigation.
