The game between Brookings High School Bobcats and Rapid City Central Cobblers was approaching half-time when a Bobcats winger won a 50/50 duel against a Cobblers defender. The full-back took issue with the challenge, rushed across, and shoved his rival to the ground.
He then kicked the winger and unleashed several punches as the referee sprinted over but merely stood watching. Players and coaches eventually broke up the pair, with another Bobcats player rushing in to defend his teammate. Tensions eased as coaches and the referee regained control.
Referee's Inaction Criticized
A coach escorted the defender off the pitch, and he reportedly did not return. The match was suspended for 10 minutes before resuming, according to Matt Kerney, a South Dakota preps reporter who posted video of the incident on X.
The video quickly went viral. One user responded: "That kid in the white jersey should not ever play at his school again." Another fumed: "Genuinely, ban that kid from playing." A third added: "That was no real provocation. Ban him for life. Football is not for him..." A fourth said: "He should be jailed."
