Essex Police have reported an update on allegations surrounding David Sullivan, the former chairman of West Ham United. The force has received new information following claims of sexual misconduct against the 77-year-old, who recently stepped down from his role to fight what he describes as 'false allegations'.
Allegations and Police Response
On Monday, the BBC and The Times published accounts from seven women who accused Sullivan of sexually exploitative and predatory behaviour. Essex Police stated on Thursday that they had 'received some contact and inquiries into those are now under way'. The force emphasised that they take such allegations seriously and urged any victims to come forward.
The Independent Football Regulator (IFR) has also contacted West Ham United to seek information about Sullivan's suitability as a co-owner. Downing Street described the allegations as 'harrowing' and supported the police assessment.

The allegations date back to the 1980s and 1990s, when Sullivan owned tabloid newspapers the Daily Sport and the Sunday Sport. Reports claim he pressured young or aspiring models in their late teens or early 20s. The Times conducted a two-year investigation, interviewing dozens of former models and industry sources.

In a statement announcing his resignation as West Ham chairman, Sullivan said: 'The false allegations levelled against me have been sensationalised by the media. After a lifetime spent building businesses in the adult industry, it is sadly inevitable that a small number of improper conduct claims are being made against me. I categorically deny these claims.' He added that his decision was made 'out of love, respect and responsibility toward a football club and a fanbase that deserve absolute unity and focus moving forward.'
