Escaped prisoner Marwan Jumaa recaptured by police

Marwan Jumaa, 20, a Sudanese national considered an extreme danger to females, has been rearrested after escaping from a secure hospital facility. Jumaa was serving an indefinite secure hospital sentence for attacking two women when he fled during a medical transfer to North Manchester Hospital on Tuesday evening, July 14.

Escape and manhunt

Jumaa's escape triggered a frantic search, as authorities deemed him a risk to himself and others. Police circulated a CCTV image showing Jumaa casually leaving the hospital unaccompanied, wearing a light blue T-shirt. Greater Manchester Police (GMP) issued an urgent public appeal for information on his whereabouts.

In the early hours of Friday, GMP announced that Jumaa had been arrested by a member of Lancashire Constabulary. A GMP statement expressed gratitude: “Thank you to everyone who shared and responded to our appeal earlier this evening to help locate wanted man Marwan Jumaa. Following extensive enquiries, we can confirm that Jumaa has been arrested by our colleagues at Lancashire Constabulary. He is currently in their custody.”

Police response

Detective Superintendent Nicola McCulloch of GMP’s serious crime division described the investigation as fast-paced, involving significant resources. “An observant Lancashire Constabulary officer recognised Jumaa and acted swiftly to arrest him. He will now be returned to a secure hospital facility,” McCulloch said. She thanked the public for their support, noting that call handlers received a considerable amount of information that proved invaluable in locating Jumaa.

Previous convictions

Court records show that in January this year, Jumaa pleaded guilty to three offences at Woolwich Crown Court. The offences, all committed on July 17 last year in London, include assaulting an emergency worker, a police officer, the robbery of a woman, and inflicting grievous bodily harm on a second woman. Jumaa had been held at HMP Belmarsh in March and was sentenced for the offences in April this year.
