A major fire has destroyed the roof and top floors of a historic building on Edinburgh's Princes Street, formerly housing a Debenhams department store. The blaze broke out in the early hours of Thursday, July 9, 2026, with emergency services receiving the first calls at 2:52 AM.
Fire Response and Damage
The Scottish Fire and Rescue Service mobilised six fire crews, two height appliances, and additional support resources to tackle the inferno. Firefighters remained on scene more than eight hours later, working to extinguish hotspots and dampen down the structure. The building's roof and upper floors collapsed during the fire, leaving the historic facade scarred.
Residents across the city reported seeing smoke billowing from the former department store. Images from the scene show flames ripping through the building and extensive damage to the interior.
Travel Disruption
The fire caused severe travel disruption in Edinburgh city centre. Several streets around the building were cordoned off by police, forcing diversions for Citylink and Lothian Buses. Edinburgh Trams were unable to operate a full service, impacting commuters during the morning rush hour.
Police Scotland set up a large cordon on Princes Street, with officers guarding the area. The road closures are expected to remain in place while fire crews continue their work and structural assessments are carried out.
