A massive fire at the former Debenhams department store on Princes Street in Edinburgh has caused 'significant damage' to the B-listed building, with the roof and top floors completely destroyed. The city centre faces a second day of disruption as emergency services continue to dampen down hotspots and make the area safe.
Fire Damage and Structural Impact
The blaze, which broke out in the early hours of Thursday, gutted the historic building, leaving the interior blackened and charred. The roof and top floors collapsed during the fire, and the rest of the structure has been severely damaged. Firefighters and police have been unable to enter the building because it has been deemed unsafe.
Ongoing Travel Disruptions
Travel chaos is expected to persist on Friday, with tram and bus services continuing to face diversions. Lothian Buses confirmed that due to road closures, buses cannot serve Shandwick Place, Princes Street, or Waterloo Place. Instead, they are diverted via Morrison Link and West Approach Road, terminating at the Exchange until further notice. Edinburgh Trams are running a reduced service from Edinburgh Airport to the West End only.
Ticket acceptance is in place with ScotRail between Edinburgh Gateway and Edinburgh Park to Edinburgh Waverley (St Andrew Square) and on Lothian Buses between the West End and Newhaven.
Road Closures and Safety Measures
Castle Street, Frederick Street, and Rose Street North Lane reopened at approximately 8.30pm on Thursday. However, Princes Street remains closed, along with Rose Street and Rose Street South Lane. Police Scotland advised the public to continue avoiding the area and to keep windows and doors closed where possible.
Investigation Underway
Police said a joint investigation is ongoing to establish the cause of the fire. Work is ongoing to ensure the area is made safe, and inquiries are at an early stage.
