Dunblane roundabout safety delays unacceptable as report reviewed

Delays in implementing safety improvements at the Keir Roundabout in Dunblane have been branded “unacceptable” by politicians, as ministers admit there is no timescale for the changes. The roundabout, which connects Dunblane and Bridge of Allan with the busy A9 road, has been a blackspot for accidents in recent years.

A study conducted by Amey in 2025, consisting of a traffic surveillance survey and conflict study of the A9 Keir roundabout, was only shared with Transport Scotland on June 1, 2026. Green Mid Scotland and Fife MSP Mark Ruskell revealed that Transport Secretary Stephen Flynn offered no timeline for when findings will be considered or recommendations made.

Political criticism mounts

Mr Ruskell said: “Everyone who has to use the Keir Roundabout knows that safety improvements are urgently needed. It’s been an issue for years – and it’s utterly unacceptable that it is taking Transport Scotland so long to take action. It should not take over a year for Transport Scotland to review the outcomes of a traffic survey and come up with recommendations. The safety of residents and visitors using the Keir Roundabout should not be left at risk due to painfully slow government action. I urge the new Cabinet Secretary to sort this out – and provide reassurances to those forced to navigate the Keir Roundabout that their safety matters.”

Cllr Alasdair Tollemache, who represents the Dunblane and Bridge of Allan area at Stirling Council, added: “The safety of the Keir Roundabout is not being properly prioritised by Transport Scotland and the Scottish Government. Safety measures are vital and this is a priority for all of my constituents. I experience this roundabout myself and have seen accidents and near misses. It is not acceptable to still be waiting for the results of the traffic survey from last July.”

Transport Scotland response

A Transport Scotland spokesman said: “Each year Transport Scotland, through its operating companies, undertakes a review of personal injury collisions on the trunk road network to identify cluster sites, or routes with recorded collisions that may be worthwhile of further investigation. Through this process and following community engagement, a conflict study was undertaken at Keir Roundabout in 2025. As of June 2026, the findings have been shared with Transport Scotland and are currently being considered. Road safety measures have previously been introduced at the roundabout including electronic vehicle-activated signs on the southbound approach and improved road markings. Any further improvements resulting from the study will follow as resources and wider priorities allow.”

The lack of a clear timeline has frustrated local communities, who have long called for action on the roundabout, which connects Dunblane and Bridge of Allan with the A9. The frequency of crashes has led to criticism that not enough is being done to ensure safety for road users.
