Jason Turner lost his hand after a firework-like device exploded while he was cleaning up rubbish at Point St. George Beach in Northern California. The incident occurred on July 4, 2026, when Turner and his girlfriend Pamala Ganfield were walking along the beach and he picked up a "shiny, round object" that detonated in his hand.
Details of the Incident
According to a GoFundMe campaign set up by his daughter Ashley Turner, Jason was helping to clean up firework remnants from the Fourth of July celebrations. The Del Norte County Sheriff's Office reported that Turner was found in the beach's car park with a "significant injury to his hand" and was taken to a nearby hospital. The couple were approximately a quarter of a mile from the car park and without any phone signal when the device exploded.
Ashley Turner described the object as a cylindrical device poking out of a mound of sand near the waterline. The explosion resulted in the loss of his hand, turning what should have been a simple act of kindness into a life-changing emergency.
Medical Consequences
Turner suffered severe injuries including amputation of his hand, metal fragments in his eyes, blood behind his left eye, a blown right eardrum, and complete hearing loss in that ear. The GoFundMe campaign initially sought $40,000 (£29,000) to cover medical bills and associated expenses.
Community Response and Investigation
As of Friday, the fundraiser had raised over $96,000 (£71,000), significantly exceeding its goal. Sheriff Kayle Stevens told NBC News that police have not been able to identify the device because no debris or remnants were found at the scene. The sheriff's office has not found any similar devices and continues to investigate. They warned the public: "If you find a suspected explosive device do not touch it. Move away to a safe distance and immediately contact law enforcement."
