Philip Nicholls, 36, of Barnes Drive in Lydiate, was sentenced to four years in prison at Liverpool Crown Court on Friday for a series of violent attacks fueled by cocaine. He admitted charges including wounding without intent, assault occasioning actual bodily harm, and burglary.
Chase on Dual Carriageway
On March 11, Nicholls, on a five-day cocaine bender, spat in his girlfriend's face after an argument at her home. Two days later, on March 13, he drove her around St Helens and suggested buying cocaine. When she refused, an argument ensued, and she tried to leave. Nicholls chased her down the Rainford Bypass, shouting, 'Here comes Johnny,' before punching her in the head and stomach, pushing her to the ground, and stealing her keys, phone, and bank card, leaving her stranded.
Attack on Girlfriend's Brother
Later that evening, Nicholls forced open the back gate of his girlfriend's brother's home, claiming damage was caused by youths. He then suddenly attacked the brother, punching and kicking him, causing a fractured eye socket and significant cheekbone damage. He stole a wallet and £30 cash, later using a stolen bank card at a Shell garage in Maghull.
Victim Impact Statements
The brother stated, 'I thought he was a friend... This has shattered my confidence in other people.' The girlfriend said, 'Friday the 13th used to feel like a lucky day... Now I associate it with fear, trauma, and the day my life changed.' She described Nicholls shouting 'here comes Johnny' as haunting her, causing panic attacks and severe anxiety.
Previous Convictions and Sentencing
Nicholls had seven previous convictions, including burglary and sexual assault. His defense lawyer noted his addiction to cocaine drove the offenses. Recorder David Knifton KC said the victim's statement described 'lasting psychological impact.' Nicholls was jailed for four years and given indefinite restraining orders against both victims.
