The first West Dunbartonshire derby in 25 years was interrupted on Tuesday evening when fireworks let off by youths outside Holm Park landed on the pitch, forcing the referee to stop the KDM Evolution Trophy match between Clydebank and Dumbarton FC.
The sell-out game ground to a halt as fireworks directed from Glasgow Road in Clydebank exploded over the Bankies' home ground while players were on the turf. Spectators described "mad" scenes as fireworks "kept getting closer to the pitch" until sparks flew onto the field, prompting concern from hundreds of fans.
Footage shows fireworks exploding near stands
Footage filmed by Followingthe42, who was vlogging the game, shows the fireworks exploding over Holm Park. The game continues until a particularly big explosion erupts near the stands, with attendees heard booing and exclaiming "oh no," "I s*** myself," "not good," and "f****** hell" as the referee blows the whistle to stop play.
Gunpowder can be seen in the air as security in high-visibility jackets spring into action. One attendee said on X: "This was outside the ground, but very dangerous. Ref stopped the game as sparks flew onto the pitch. The fuel terminal behind the park is right next to the cycle path where the fireworks were let off."
Police investigate incident
Another visitor said: "Madness from whoever let them off. Started out that I thought it was okay but the fireworks just kept getting closer to the pitch. Apparently just some neds and not to do with the Clydebank fans."
Police Scotland said no one was hurt and enquiries are ongoing to trace those responsible. Chief Inspector Lynn Edwards said: "Enquiries are ongoing to trace youths who launched fireworks in the Glasgow Road area of Clydebank on the evening of Tuesday, 13 October, 2026. One of the fireworks landed on the pitch of Holm Park, causing the football match between Clydebank and Dumbarton to be temporarily stopped.
"There were no injuries or damage reported. Ongoing high-visibility patrols will continue in the area to deter further antisocial behaviour as the Bonfire Night period approaches."
Clydebank win historic match 4-0
A Clydebank spokesperson said: "We thank our security team and police for responding to the situation immediately. We condemn all antisocial behaviour and remind anyone who wants to commit it that they are not welcome at Holm Park."
Clydebank won the challenge cup game 4-0, with goals from Oisín McHugh, Neil McLaughlin, Dom Docherty and an own goal from Mason Munn. The match was described as an "historical" night with 1,400 supporters in attendance.
