A dramatic cliff collapse at a popular Welsh beach sent a massive dust cloud billowing over sunbathers, leaving onlookers stunned that no one was injured. The incident occurred at approximately 4:30 p.m. on Friday, July 10, 2026, along the stretch of coastline between Penarth beach and the Cardiff Bay Barrage.
Witness Describes Narrow Escape
David Wilton, who was present at Penarth beach at the time, described the scene as "truly amazing" that nobody was hurt. Speaking to WalesOnline, he said: "Lots of us were down that side of Penarth beach as it was a very hot Friday after work and it was high tide. There were lots of teens a bit further down towards where slide was who looked to be away from all the adults. We then heard a rumble and then saw a small slide – we all knew what it was."
Wilton added: "There was a big cloud of dust. Our concern was whether anyone was injured. It's truly amazing that people were not as there were sunbathers either side of the landslide. People just stood and stared as it rare to actually see one, especially at a busy time."
Council Issues Urgent Warning
Vale of Glamorgan council released a statement "strongly" urging the public to stay away from the affected area while council teams assess the scale of the landslip. A council spokesman said: "This stretch of coastline has a well-documented history of cliff instability, landslides, and rockfalls, particularly following prolonged weather events and coastal erosion."
The spokesman continued: "Council teams are assessing the extent of the landslip and will take any necessary action to ensure public safety. The public is strongly advised to stay away from the affected area and, as a precaution, keep clear of all cliff faces and the areas directly beneath them as landslides and rockfalls can occur without warning."
Historical Instability and Safety Precautions
The council emphasized that the coastline has an extensive history of instability and urged residents and visitors to continue observing warning signs, barriers, and safety notices. "We are continuing to monitor the situation and will share further updates as they become available," the spokesman added.
The collapse occurred on a hot summer day when the beach was crowded with people enjoying the weather after work. A striking photograph circulated online showing a substantial cloud of dust close to individuals who had been sunbathing, highlighting the proximity of the danger.
