Channel 5 doc examines death of teenage boxer Ed Bilbey

Channel 5 is airing a documentary examining the death of a "superfit" teenage boxer who collapsed after just nine minutes in the ring. The episode of Cause of Death, presented by Forensic Pathologist Dr Richard Shepherd, follows the coronial investigation into the death of 17-year-old Ed Bilbey from Derbyshire.

In 2017, Bilbey entered the ring aiming to win the East Midlands amateur youth welterweight title. Despite being declared medically fit to fight, he collapsed nine minutes into the bout and was rushed to hospital, where he was pronounced dead later that evening. His family were left with questions about why he collapsed and what had really happened.

Coronial investigation into a superfit teenager

The documentary offers viewers never-before-seen access into real-life coronial investigations after sudden, unexpected, or unexplained deaths. The series follows cases from the first emergency call through the post-mortem examination to the final inquest, with each episode examining a different tragic case.

A synopsis for the episode reads: "On the night of the bout, he was passed medically fit to fight, but after just nine minutes in the ring, he collapsed. Despite the efforts of paramedics and hospital staff, he was pronounced dead later that evening. Neither his family, nor his young opponent who witnessed Ed's collapse first-hand, can understand why he has died."

Weight loss and training regime under scrutiny

The synopsis continues: "Ed's mother Michelle, his brothers Henry and George and his grandmother Janet describe a superfit teenager who trained for a college sports qualification by day and at his local boxing gym at night. Forensic Pathologist Dr Richard Shepherd sets out to explain what could have led to the death of an athletic young boxer who had been cleared to fight."

An exercise physiologist appointed by the coroner reconstructs what Ed's body was going through as he prepared for the fight, revealing potentially dangerous weight loss methods and an extreme training regime. A post-mortem specialist review of his heart reveals more clues. The investigation leads to an inquest where questions of responsibility lead to a change in England Boxing guidelines.

Second case: Warwick University student Isaac Harris

The episode also covers the coronial investigation into the death of 21-year-old Warwick University student Isaac Harris, who had been failing to pick up calls from his family and friends. In June 2023, his stepfather Stephen raced 100 miles to the home Isaac shared with flatmate Vlad, where they discovered him facedown on his bed.

The synopsis adds: "A post-mortem provides no clues, but a toxicology report reveals that Isaac's body is missing vital medication to control epileptic seizures. Could a seizure have killed him. Or is there more to his death than first appears? For both families, knowing how their sons died is only the start of understanding why."

Cause of Death airs on 5 on Wednesdays at 9pm.
