Celtic fans were forced to evacuate a supporters coach after it burst into flames moments after their team's defeat to Rangers at Celtic Park. Police confirmed no one was injured.
Fire breaks out near Emirates Arena
The blaze started on the A728 close to the Emirates Arena at around 2:30pm. It began at the back of the coach and quickly spread, with smoke billowing into the air. Fans were quickly evacuated, and Police Scotland confirmed there were no injuries.
The bus is thought to have belonged to the Motherwell 9 in a Row CSC, who hire a bus from McLean's Coaches of Airdrie.
Coach company suspects vandalism
McLean's Coaches issued a statement saying they believe the fire may have been caused by vandalism. The statement read: “We are aware of an incident involving one of our coaches on the Clyde Gateway earlier today.
“We understand there were passengers onboard at the time, including families and young children, and fully appreciate how frightening the incident must have been for everyone involved. Thankfully, everyone was able to get off the coach safely.
“Based on the initial information and images we have received, we have reason to believe the incident may have been caused by vandalism.
“To be absolutely clear, this is not an allegation against the passengers or the supporters’ club. The matter has been reported to the relevant authorities, who are investigating the circumstances.
“The vehicle has been recovered and will undergo a full inspection. We would like to thank the emergency services and everyone who assisted at the scene.”
Match aftermath and league standings
Rangers won the match, with Ryan Naderi scoring the winner. Despite the defeat, Celtic remain top of the Scottish Premiership table on 18 points, while Rangers are two points behind.
The coach fire was eventually put out by the Scottish Fire and Rescue Service, and the vehicle was loaded onto a recovery lorry. The league will now take an enforced break due to upcoming international fixtures, resuming in three weeks' time. Rangers' next match is against Kilmarnock at Ibrox, while Celtic will face Motherwell away from home.
