A 34-year-old British tourist has died after being pulled from the sea in the popular holiday hotspot of Zante, Greece. The man got into difficulty while in the water near Marathonisi on Tuesday, with bystanders raising the alarm to his distress.
He was pulled ashore by fellow beachgoers and port authority officers, where he was given CPR and first aid. He was then rushed in critical condition to the General Hospital of Zakynthos, where he later died.
Investigation Underway
The Zakynthos Port Authority is investigating the circumstances surrounding the man's death, and an autopsy is to be carried out.
Authorities said: "Yesterday afternoon (Tuesday), the Zakynthos Port Authority was informed of a 34-year-old foreigner (British citizen) in a difficult position near the Marathonisi area of Laganas, Zakynthos."
"With the assistance of beachgoers, he was transported to the shore where he was provided with first aid using the cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) method."
"The 34-year-old was picked up by a patrol boat and transported to the port of Agios Sostis, Zakynthos. Subsequently, the man was taken to the Zakynthos General Hospital, where he was pronounced dead."
"A preliminary investigation is being conducted by the Zakynthos Port Authority."
Previous Incident Involving British Tourist
This comes after another British tourist was left fighting for his life in hospital last month following a quad biking incident in Zante. Bradley Belhomme, from Salford, suffered major head injuries after a crash last Friday, July 3, his loved ones said. He had been on the popular Greek party island for just one day when the tragic incident took place.
He and his friends had rented quad bikes to explore the island, but the trip turned into a nightmare when Bradley was involved in a serious crash and rushed to hospital, according to his mum. The Brit was reportedly riding with another friend, who was also hospitalised with less serious injuries. While Bradley was first hospitalised on the Greek island, he was later transferred to another clinic in the country's capital for treatment.
