Salis Hanrahan, a 20-year-old British man, was fatally shot in Philadelphia by George Barr, a 75-year-old Vietnam War veteran. Hanrahan, who had an Irish traveller background and was from Essex, was allegedly a member of a group described as "The Traveling Conman Fraud Group," according to police and the FBI. The group is designated as a criminal gang by the FBI and consists of British and Irish scammers who overcharge for building work they never complete.
Incident Details
The shooting occurred inside Barr's home on July 8, 2026. Hanrahan had been working on Barr's home when an argument broke out. Barr fired shots, striking Hanrahan in the chest. Hanrahan managed to escape the home but collapsed on the pavement and died from his injuries shortly afterward. Police arrived at the scene after neighbors reported hearing gunshots.
Philadelphia police captain James Kimrey stated that contractors were outside the home shortly after 2 p.m. when shots were fired. "They heard arguments or some kind of commotion inside and then they found the boss outside," Kimrey said. Barr's neighbor, Erin Kelly, expressed shock, saying, "He's always friendly. Every time I've encountered him. It's just crazy that it happened here. It's always quiet here."
Background of the Victim
Hanrahan was believed to be working illegally in the US. A spokesman for the Department of Homeland Security confirmed that Hanrahan was an illegal alien from the United Kingdom. "He entered the country illegally on an unknown date and location and was denied Electronic System for Travel Authorization as he was determined to have affiliation with 'The Traveling Conman Fraud Group,' a transnational criminal organization. ICE and CBP have never encountered this individual," the spokesman said.
Hanrahan leaves behind his wife, Roseann, and a daughter. Roseann shared an image on social media, writing, "My beautiful husband I love you so much."
Suspect and Charges
George Barr, a retired firefighter and Vietnam veteran, was charged with murder, possession of an instrument of crime, and recklessly endangering another person. He also ran an unofficial neighborhood watch. The investigation into the shooting is ongoing. Police have not confirmed whether Barr was specifically targeted by the fraud group or if the dispute was personal.
