A British couple has been arrested in Spain after allegedly leaving their three young children alone in a hotel room on the Costa del Sol to go out partying. According to local media, the arrests occurred after the youngest child, a six-month-old baby, tested positive for cocaine.
Children Taken into Care
The children, aged four, two, and six months, have reportedly been placed under temporary care by social services. Sources close to the investigation described the condition of the hotel room as "worrying," noting that it was in a mess and the eldest child was looking after the others.
Arrests in Benalmadena
The arrests were made in Benalmadena, a popular resort town. The couple, a 41-year-old man and a 28-year-old woman, are being held on suspicion of child abandonment. Spain's National Police confirmed that a specialist family and women assistance unit, UFAM, is involved in the investigation.
The children were taken to Malaga's Materno Infantil Hospital for a medical check-up. The hotel where the family was staying, described as a "very large hotel complex," has not been named.
Police Investigation
The British pair were reportedly detained in the early hours of Thursday morning. Police have not commented on local reports that the baby tested positive for cocaine. It is expected that the couple will be held in police custody overnight before appearing in court for a first hearing before a judge.
