Two cars travelling on the M4 in Newport were left damaged after a bag of bricks and metal poles was thrown onto the motorway on Thursday afternoon. One of the affected vehicles was an NHS ambulance responding to an emergency call. The incident occurred near St Julians at around 4pm, prompting police to close one lane while traffic officers cleared debris from the carriageway.

One driver described suffering minor cuts to his head and arms from shattered glass after his windscreen was smashed by the flying objects. Gwent Police received two reports of bricks being thrown at vehicles travelling along the M4 near the Brynglas Tunnels at approximately 4.20pm on Thursday, June 25.

Police Investigation Underway

Officers conducted a search of the area but no suspect was located. A spokesperson for Gwent Police said: “We received two reports of bricks being thrown at vehicles travelling along the M4 near the Brynglas Tunnels at around 4.20pm on Thursday, June 25. Two cars – including an emergency response vehicle – were damaged. No injuries were reported. Officers attended to conduct a search of the area, but no-one was found.”

The police confirmed that enquiries are ongoing and urged anyone with information to contact them via 101, online, or social media, quoting log reference 2600200716. They also appealed to motorists who were travelling along the M4 near the Brynglas Tunnels between 4pm and 4.30pm to check their dashcam footage for any relevant evidence.

Impact on Drivers and Emergency Services

The driver of the ambulance vehicle sustained cuts from glass fragments, though the extent of injuries was described as minor. The other damaged car also bore visible marks from the impact. Images released by police show a brick resting on the bonnet of the NHS vehicle and significant damage to the windscreen of the second car.

Gwent Police continue to investigate the incident, which caused disruption on the busy motorway during the afternoon rush hour. Authorities are treating the matter seriously, as such actions pose a significant risk to road safety and could have resulted in more severe consequences.
