A two-year-old boy who died in a hit-and-run in Limerick will be laid to rest this week following a Mass of the Angels.
Peter Mulcaire, from Abbey Court, Rathkeale, was struck by a Jeep on Abbey Court just after 3.50pm on Saturday. A relative took him immediately to University Hospital Limerick, where he was declared dead shortly afterwards.
Arrest made after incident
The Jeep reportedly left the scene after the collision. Gardaí later arrested a man in his 30s at a separate location on suspicion of driving while under the influence of an intoxicant, according to the Irish Mirror.
The man was brought to a Garda Station in Limerick and provided an evidential sample. He has since been released pending analysis.
Funeral arrangements announced
Peter's death notice on RIP.ie reads: "It is with the heaviest of hearts that we announce the sudden and unexpected death of our beautiful little boy Peter Mulcaire aged just two years."
The notice adds: "Predeceased by members of the Harty and Mulcaire Families. Deeply mourned and forever loved by his heartbroken parents Kerrie and James, his loving brother Jim and sister Delilah, grandparents, great-grandparents, uncles, aunts, cousins, extended Harty and Mulcaire families. 'Forever our Little Angel, May He Rest in Eternal Peace'."
Peter will lie in repose at Cross's Funeral Home on Gerald Griffin Street in Limerick on Tuesday, September 8, from 6pm to 8pm. A Mass of the Angels will take place on Wednesday at 11.30am in St. Mary's Church Rathkeale, followed by burial in the new cemetery in Rathkeale.
Tributes pour in
Last week, Peter's mother, Kerrie, shared photographs on social media of Peter ahead of his first day at pre-school. The images show him smiling beside a balloon reading "Peter's first day of pre-school".
Tributes have since flooded in for the young boy. One mourner wrote: "This world can be so cruel at times". Another said: "Rest in perfect peace to this beautiful boy".
