An 11-year-old boy has died after the go-kart he was driving rolled over into a pond in the town of Darien, Genesee County, New York, with an eight-year-old girl also on board.
Emergency services responded to the incident on Sunday afternoon. The boy was reportedly trapped by the go-kart in the water, and family members and firefighters freed him before he was given CPR at the scene.
Air ambulance response
The Genesee County Sheriff’s Office said police responded at around 2.30pm. The boy was taken by air ambulance to Strong Memorial Hospital in Rochester but was pronounced dead on arrival.
The eight-year-old girl passenger was treated at the scene, according to the Genesee County Sheriff’s Office.
Investigation and condolences
An investigation has been launched by police, with no further information released so far, reported WIBV.
Many people have taken to social media to express their sadness and offer condolences. One person wrote on Facebook: "So sad. I live on the same road. Saw the responders. Last I heard he was in serious condition, on his way to strong. My heart breaks for and goes out to that family."
Another comment read: "That’s so sad. Sending my prayer’s to their family and friend’s." A further person wrote: "I saw this call go out and really hoped it wasn’t a child I can’t imagine what this family is going through this is so sad."
One more added: "Prayers for the family and all involved in this this terrible tragedy."
