John Louis Evans III: Burst Into Flames in the Electric Chair
John Louis Evans III was 33 years old when he was executed in Alabama in 1983. After being convicted of murder, his appeal to the Supreme Court was denied, leading him to face the electric chair, nicknamed Yellow Mama. Strapped into the chair, he was hit with 1,900 volts of electricity, but the restraint on his left leg broke, causing sparks and eventually bursting into flames. Witnesses reported seeing smoke and sparks emerge from beneath the hood covering his head, but Evans was still alive after the first jolts. Two additional 30-second surges were administered, and he ultimately died in what his lawyers deemed a 'cruel and unusual punishment.'
Jimmy Lee Gray: Audience Evacuated During Gas Chamber Execution
Jimmy Lee Gray suffered a horrifying death when he was executed for murdering a 10-year-old girl in 1976. After being sentenced to death, he was taken into the death chamber to be killed using gas. Just after 12:10 a.m. on the day of his execution, cyanide pellets fell into the acid underneath the seat he was tied to. As the gas rose, Gray immediately began convulsing, screaming in pain, and bashing his head against the metal pole behind him. Groaning in agony each time he breathed in the gas, horrified witnesses had to evacuate the room as they could not bear to watch his final moments. He remained in the gas chamber for another 12 minutes before being declared dead.
Clayton Lockett: Lethal Injection Turned Into a 'Bloody Mess'
Clayton Lockett was 38 years old when he was put to death in 2018 for the kidnap, rape, and murder of a 19-year-old woman, whom he buried alive. He was scheduled to face lethal injection, but on the day of his execution, doctors struggled for 50 minutes to find a suitable vein, eventually locating one in his groin. However, when the doctor attempted to insert the needle, it struck an artery, causing blood to spray onto staff and leaving the chamber a 'bloody mess.' Eventually, he received the injection, but the effects took an excruciatingly long time to take hold. Officials drew the curtains 16 minutes into the execution as Lockett writhed and yelled in pain. He was declared dead after 43 minutes.
Tony Carruthers: Execution Suspended After Failed Vein Search
Another similar lethal injection incident occurred earlier this year when executioners in Tennessee tried for over an hour to find a suitable vein to administer the poison. Tony Carruthers was due to be executed on May 21, but medics could not find a vein to attach the IV solution. Carruthers was eventually granted a suspension of his execution for a year. The governor of Tennessee decided it was necessary due to the lack of suitable veins, prompting calls to review the system.
