A 24-year-old prisoner from Bolton died after suffering a cardiac arrest triggered by smoking the synthetic drug spice using a modified vape. Adam Diesa-Green passed away on January 17, 2025, at HMP Lowdham Grange in Nottinghamshire.
Investigation Findings
A report by the Prisons and Probation Ombudsman concluded that Diesa-Green's death resulted from a cardiac arrest caused by synthetic cannabinoids. He had been serving a five-year and ten-month sentence for grievous bodily harm with intent, imposed in May 2023.
History of Drug Use
According to the report, Diesa-Green had a history of drug use both in the community and while incarcerated. Two days before his death, he attended a support group meeting where the risks of psychoactive substances were emphasized. Despite this, he continued to use drugs.
Ombudsman Adrian Usher noted: 'Mr Diesa-Green used illicit substances in the community, which continued while in prison. He disclosed his alcohol dependency and regularly brewed illicit alcohol at Lowdham Grange, which he consumed daily.'
Incident Details
At 5:52 PM on January 17, 2025, during evening lock-up, an officer found Diesa-Green unresponsive in his cell. Staff and paramedics attempted resuscitation, but he was pronounced dead at the scene. A post-mortem examination confirmed the cause of death as cardiac arrest due to synthetic cannabinoid use, with toxicology also revealing recent ketamine use.
Drugs and Weapons Found
After his death, prison staff discovered 34 tampered vape capsules, a USB stick, three weapons, and up to 100ml of illicit alcohol in his cell. The report stated: 'Prisoners tampering with vapes to smoke psychoactive substances is a common theme across the prison estate.'
