Firefighters are battling a massive blaze at a disused former Catholic convent in East Sussex. East Sussex Fire and Rescue Service (ESFRS) were called to the College Of The Holy Child Jesus on Magdalen Road in St Leonards at approximately 5pm on Thursday, July 9.
Fire Crews Respond to Historic Site
By 5.30pm, six fire engines had been deployed to the scene, alongside a water carrier and support officers. Plumes of thick smoke were visible rising into the sky above the historic building. No injuries have been reported, according to ESFRS. Residents living nearby have been advised to keep their doors and windows closed to avoid smoke inhalation.
The fire is believed to have started on the third floor of the former Catholic college, which previously served as living accommodation for a school. The building, which closed as a college in 1976, was later used as a language school before falling into disrepair. The chapel remains Grade II listed.
Ongoing Firefighting Efforts
Roads in the surrounding area have been closed to facilitate emergency operations. Police and an electricity operator are also in attendance to ensure safety and manage utilities. As of 9pm, the incident had been scaled down to three fire engines. ESFRS stated, "Firefighting continues and steady progress is being made."
The cause of the fire is under investigation. The former convent, known as the College Of The Holy Child Jesus, is a significant local landmark with historical importance.
