Biker Killed by 22ft Python While Stopping to Urinate

A 25-year-old motorcyclist in Indonesia was killed by a giant python that attacked him while he stopped to urinate by the roadside. The victim, identified only as Lifas, was riding to a plantation in Taliabu Regency, North Maluku, early on June 23 when the 22-foot (6.7-meter) reticulated python emerged from the undergrowth and latched onto his leg.

Attack Details

Lifas was traveling along a dirt road lined with trees and tall grass. He pulled over to relieve himself when the hidden python suddenly struck. The snake clamped onto his leg, causing him to fall over in pain. It then coiled tightly around his torso and neck, squeezing the air from his lungs. No one heard his cries for help.

Discovery and Rescue Attempt

The gruesome scene was discovered by a passing motorist named Reju, 39, who saw Lifas lying motionless with blue skin, the python still wrapped around his body. Unable to grapple with the large snake alone, Reju rushed to a nearby police outpost for help. Officers and villagers returned with machetes and hacked the snake to death, but Lifas was no longer breathing when they freed him.

Police Warning

Local police chief Adnan Wahyu Kashogi urged residents to be vigilant when passing through forested areas. He said: "We ask all citizens heading to plantations, especially alone, to be careful of being attacked by wild animals. Do not forget to bring adequate equipment to help defend yourself from sudden attacks."

Recent Similar Incident

The incident comes just two weeks after a mother was killed by a python in the same province. Elisabet Yamalau, 44, was tending cattle in her garden when she was attacked by a 25-foot (7.6-meter) reticulated python in Pulau Taliabu Regency on June 9. Her husband, Benyamin Lanto, 52, found her partially inside the snake's mouth and hacked the reptile to death, but she had already died at the scene, police said.

Species Background

The reticulated python is found throughout Southeast Asia, inhabiting forests, swamps, canals, and even cities, leading to conflicts with humans. It is one of the world's largest snakes and can eat humans, cats, dogs, birds, rats, and other snakes. Due to its large size, it is also capable of killing humans by constriction. Lifas's body was taken to a hospital for a post-mortem examination.
