Liam Harmer, a familiar and much-loved Big Issue seller in Swansea, has died in a flat fire in Townhill. The incident occurred on Tuesday, July 14, at Elphin Gardens, prompting a response from emergency services including police, multiple fire crews, and the Wales Air Ambulance. Despite their efforts, Liam could not be saved.
Community Mourns a Beloved Figure
Tributes have poured in for Liam, who sold The Big Issue in Sketty for many years. Known for his gentle nature and kindness, he was a comforting presence in the neighbourhood. One neighbour said: "He didn't have a bad bone in his body. He would always wave leaving the house, which was every day at eight o'clock, on the dot."
Tom Watts, Big Issue's sales and operations manager for Wales, who knew Liam for over a decade, paid tribute: "Liam sold the Big Issue in Sketty, Swansea, where he had been a familiar face for many years. He was very well liked and had built up a strong community of regular customers, many of whom became his friends."
A Kind and Gentle Vendor
Watts recalled Liam's character: "I knew Liam for over a decade. I first met him in the Swansea office shortly after I started at the Big Issue, and I remember immediately thinking what a genuinely nice person he was. He was one of the kindest vendors I ever met, and I never heard anyone say a bad word about him."
Even during tough times, Liam's nature shone through. Watts added: "Being a Big Issue vendor can be incredibly tough, and the pressures people face can sometimes make life and relationships difficult. Liam, however, was always pleasant, gentle and kind. He would often ring the office for a chat, and we would talk about all sorts of things. He loved science-fiction novels, as I do, and I particularly remember our conversations about Arthur C. Clarke."
Investigation Underway
The coroner's office has confirmed that Liam's death has been referred to them and remains under investigation. South Wales Police is asking anyone with concerns about a friend or relative living at Elphin Gardens to contact them via 101, quoting reference 2600225184.
