A violent brawl erupted on a public beach in Fiumarella, Mondragone, in the province of Caserta, during Ferragosto celebrations, with chairs and wooden crates allegedly hurled through the air. The incident occurred at approximately 3am on Saturday, August 15, during one of Italy's most significant summer festivals.
Hundreds of tourists, including families with children, were reportedly in the vicinity when the violence began. The confrontation allegedly started over a petty disagreement before quickly escalating beyond control.
Chairs and crates launched in the melee
Chairs and wooden crates were reportedly launched through the air as participants exchanged slaps, kicks and punches. Two women were also said to be seen seizing each other by the hair and hurling insults. One woman delivered a fly kick to another.
Several knives were allegedly brandished during the pandemonium, leaving a number of people wounded. The disorder then spread from the beach onto the adjacent promenade, triggering alarm and sending dozens of people running.
Police intervene and arrests made
Officers raced to the scene and battled to separate those involved and stop the situation from worsening. Crowds began joining in on the fight. Five people were arrested and taken to a police station for identification, as reported by NeedToKnow.
They included a man and a woman from Mondragone, as well as a man, a woman and a minor from the nearby province of Naples. Ambulance teams were also summoned to attend to those hurt in the fracas. The five individuals were later identified and reported on suspicion of engaging in a brawl, insulting a public official and resisting a public official.
Mayor's edict and political response
The pandemonium broke out despite an edict from Mondragone mayor Francesco Lavanga prohibiting bonfires and camping on the beach that evening. Italian MP Francesco Borrelli has since demanded stricter controls in the region.
He stated: "More stringent checks and a widespread security presence are needed along the Domitian coast: orders and bans cannot remain merely on paper. Anyone who turns beaches and public places into scenes of violence must be identified and dealt with firmly."
