BBC Star Slams ITV Over 'Disrespectful' Widdecombe Coverage

Former BBC newsreader Jan Leeming has publicly criticised ITV News, accusing the broadcaster of being 'disrespectful' by prioritising football coverage over the murder of former Tory MP Ann Widdecombe and other major stories. In a post on X, Leeming, 83, expressed her frustration after watching ITV's 15-minute evening news programme on Sunday, which she claimed devoted the first eight minutes to England's World Cup victory against Norway.

Leeming's Criticism and Public Reaction

Leeming wrote: 'You know I'm not a footie fan. However on tonight's ITV short 15 min news the first 8 mins were devoted to it. Slightly disrespectful IMO to the Widdecombe murder and the British dead in the Almeria wildfires. Only saying and I am an old lady with different priorities.' Her comments sparked a mixed response from the public. One supporter said: 'The only defence I will give is this. The news can get very depressing these days... it’s so lovely to have good news.' Another added: 'I suppose at the current time good news stories are a pleasant break from the majority of awful news.' However, a third person agreed with Leeming, stating: 'I like football, but agree the news coverage is over the top.'

Details of Ann Widdecombe's Murder

On Friday morning, Ann Widdecombe's agent announced her death 'with great shock and sadness' at the age of 78, without disclosing details. Later that day, Devon and Cornwall Police confirmed Widdecombe had been found deceased at her home on Thursday morning with serious injuries, launching a murder investigation. On Saturday, a 28-year-old white British man was arrested on suspicion of murder in Rotherham, South Yorkshire, by officers from Counter Terrorism Policing North East and South Yorkshire Police, acting on behalf of Devon and Cornwall Police.

Police Statement and Ongoing Investigation

Assistant Chief Constable Matt Longman stated that investigators are 'open-minded' about a motive but stressed there is no indication the attack was linked to terrorism or politics. He added that police are not seeking anyone else in connection with the investigation and do not believe there is any wider threat to the public. The murder of Widdecombe, a former Conservative MP and reality TV personality, has shocked the nation, with many questioning the editorial balance of news coverage in the wake of the tragedy.
