A baby shower in Bodmin was marred by violence when Harvey Rouen, 22, assaulted female guests and brandished a knife. The incident occurred on August 30 last year at a pub where Rouen attended with his girlfriend.
Details of the Attack
Rouen, from Saltash, Plymouth, initially engaged in play-fighting with a woman before becoming aggressive. He shouted, punched, and kicked one woman repeatedly. He then followed two women who fled to another bar, where he kicked one in the stomach and punched another at the entrance. When the woman's father intervened, Rouen pulled a knife and threatened him.
Court Proceedings
At Truro Crown Court on June 5, Rouen pleaded guilty to affray and possession of a knife. The court heard victim impact statements describing terror and lasting anxiety. Defence lawyer Harriet Summerhayes noted Rouen's lack of prior convictions, his ADHD diagnosis, and his desire to rehabilitate. She highlighted his stable job and accommodation, and his ambition to start a landscaping business.
Judge Recorder Charles Murray stated Rouen ruined the joyous occasion, calling his actions terrifying. He imposed a 12-month prison sentence suspended for 18 months, with 10 rehabilitation days, mental health activities, and 100 hours of unpaid work.
