A woman in India has been accused of drowning her six-year-old niece at a wedding because she believed the child looked more beautiful than her, according to police. The incident occurred in Panipat, northern India, on Monday, during a family wedding ceremony.
The suspect, identified locally as Poonam, allegedly drowned the girl, named Vidhi, in a tub of water in a nearby storeroom. Vidhi had attended the wedding with her parents, 10-month-old brother, and grandmother. The family began searching for her after she went missing, and her grandmother found her dead an hour later.
Police Superintendent Bhupender Singh stated that the accused appears to be a psychopath who believed no child in her family should be more beautiful than her. Poonam reportedly confessed to killing three other children, including another niece and her own son, who also drowned. She is in custody but has not yet been formally charged.
