Two people have been taken to hospital after a three-vehicle collision on the A1 near Felton in Northumberland, which has closed the road in both directions and caused major traffic in the area.

Northumbria Police and the North East Ambulance Service responded to the incident this afternoon. The crash occurred between the Felton and Swarland turn-offs, with photographs showing heavy traffic as far south as the turn-off towards Northumberland Zoo and congestion up towards Eshott. Ambulances and police cars were seen at the scene.
Police statement
In a statement issued just after 4pm, Northumbria Police said officers attended the scene after receiving a report of a three-vehicle collision. No-one is reported to have been seriously injured, and a section of the road remains closed to allow for vehicle recovery.
Ambulance response
A North East Ambulance Service spokesperson said: "We received a call at 2.13pm on Monday 17 August to reports of a road traffic incident on the A1 near Felton, Northumberland." The spokesperson added: "We dispatched two ambulance crews, a clinical team leader, and two crews from our Hazardous Area Response Team (HART) to the scene. Two patients were transported to NSECH for further treatment."
The road closure is expected to continue while recovery work takes place, with emergency services remaining in attendance.
