A 12-year-old girl was found dead in a pond after allegedly being gang-raped while on her way to a shop in Baruipur, West Bengal, India, on Sunday morning. Police have arrested two suspects in connection with the attack, which triggered widespread protests and violence.

Details of the incident

The girl left home on Saturday evening, July 4, to buy food from a nearby shop. When she did not return, her parents reported her missing to police. Officers launched an immediate search and discovered her body packed inside a sack in a pond on Sunday morning. The parents told police that four people had taken her prior to her death.

Protests and violence

The alleged murder sparked widespread protests, with roads and railway lines blocked across the area. Protesters vandalised vehicles and hurled stones at police. Local media reported that a local youth was beaten to death by protesters, who claimed he had been in the company of the suspects and was believed to be involved in the murder.
