Former NBA superstar Shaquille O'Neal has generously offered to pay for the funeral of a 12-year-old girl who tragically died after a physical altercation with another student as they disembarked from a school bus in Georgia. Jada West, a sixth grader, succumbed to a severe brain injury mere hours after being involved in a street brawl in Villa Rica, located just outside Atlanta, earlier this month.
Community Support in a Time of Grief
Following the heartbreaking passing of Jada West on March 8, Shaquille O'Neal expressed his deep condolences and commitment to alleviating the financial strain on her grieving family. In an official statement, O'Neal emphasized his paternal empathy, stating, 'As a father, my heart goes out to Jada's family. No parent should ever have to bury their child, and if there is anything I can do to ease even a small part of that burden, then it is the right thing to do.' He further urged the community to rally around the family with love, support, and compassion during this immensely painful period.
Official Announcement and Investigation Details
O'Neal's compassionate offer was formally announced through a joint news release issued by the sheriffs of Douglas County, where the fight occurred, and Henry County, where O'Neal resides and serves as the sheriff's community relations chief. Both counties are situated within the Atlanta metropolitan area. The girl's untimely death is currently under investigation by the Villa Rica Police Department, approximately 30 miles west of Atlanta.
According to police reports, Jada West engaged in a fistfight with another girl near a neighborhood bus stop after being dropped off from school on March 5. Sergeant Spencer Crawford, a police spokesman, confirmed that investigators are meticulously reviewing cellphone footage of the incident, which has circulated widely on social media platforms. The distressing video depicts the two girls, both identified as students at Mason Creek Middle School, approaching each other and exchanging punches shortly after the school bus departed.
Family's Anguish and Calls for Justice
The footage shows the altercation escalating until the girls fall to the ground, at which point an adult intervenes. The video concludes with Jada picking up her backpack and walking away, but she never reached her home. Emergency responders were subsequently dispatched to a report of a young juvenile in cardiac arrest lying in the street. The results of an autopsy to determine the precise cause of death have not yet been released to the public.
Jada's aunt, De'Quala McClendon, revealed on Facebook prior to her niece's death that the two girls did not know each other personally. McClendon poignantly wrote, 'It may seem like a normal fight, but before my niece could make it home, her heart stopped and now she's laying in the hospital possibly brain dead with the outcome that she may not make it.' She explained that the argument originated at school and persisted on the school bus, expressing profound sorrow and a demand for accountability.
McClendon added, 'They failed my sister's child because we are broken by this. Someone who has never been in trouble or a fight but stood her ground against a bully... she is only 12 she's a good kid. She needs all of us to stand for her. We need answers... We want justice.' Another aunt, Lindsey McClendon Pettiford, indicated via social media that Jada's funeral is scheduled for Saturday, underscoring the family's ongoing grief and the community's collective mourning.
