Harvey Weinstein was rushed to hospital after suffering acute heart failure while incarcerated at Riker's Island in Queens, New York, according to reports. The 74-year-old disgraced Hollywood producer is awaiting sentencing for a sexual assault conviction from 2025.
Medical Emergency and Treatment
Weinstein began struggling to breathe and was swiftly transferred to Bellevue Hospital Prison Ward in Manhattan. Insiders claim he has been receiving treatment since, including an IV, heart monitor, and antibiotics for pneumonia. TMZ reports he is feeling better but has not been cleared to leave the facility.
Ongoing Health Issues
Weinstein has faced multiple health problems in prison. He previously underwent emergency heart surgery for chest pains, was hospitalized with pneumonia and Covid in 2024, and was diagnosed with chronic myeloid leukaemia, a bone marrow cancer producing abnormal blood cells, according to the National Cancer Institute.
Legal Background
Since 2017, over 100 women accused Weinstein of sexual assault and harassment, sparking the #MeToo movement. He denies all allegations of non-consensual sex. He faced charges in New York and Los Angeles, with some convictions and acquittals. His 2020 New York conviction was overturned after mistrials; prosecutors declined to pursue rape charges further. In 2023, he was sentenced to 16 years in California for rape and sexual assault, but he is awaiting sentencing in New York for a 2025 conviction before serving that term.
