A woman is fighting for her life after a hit-and-run crash on the A19 in North Tyneside. The incident occurred at around 10.40pm on Friday when the woman, driving a Volkswagen T-Roc, overtook a stationary vehicle between the Silverlink Roundabout and Holystone.
During the manoeuvre, her car collided with a Skoda Fabia, whose driver failed to stop at the scene. The woman, in her 30s, sustained serious injuries and was taken to Newcastle's Royal Victoria Infirmary, where she remains in a critical condition.
Two men, aged in their 20s and 30s, have been arrested on suspicion of causing serious injury by dangerous driving and are in police custody. Northumbria Police have launched an investigation and are appealing for witnesses, particularly those with dashcam footage.
The A19 was closed in both directions for over 12 hours, causing significant traffic disruption. The southbound carriageway reopened at around 11.30am on Saturday. The North East Ambulance Service dispatched multiple crews, supported by the Great North Air Ambulance.
