Three killed in head-on crash on A489 as car overtook tractor near Churchstoke
Three dead in A489 crash involving overtaking on narrow road

A retired couple who had recently moved to the countryside have been killed alongside another motorist in a devastating head-on collision on a narrow Welsh border road. The incident, which is under police investigation, is believed to have involved a dangerous overtaking manoeuvre past a tractor.

Details of the fatal collision

The crash occurred at approximately 4.50pm on Thursday, December 11, 2025, on a narrow stretch of the A489 between Churchstoke and Lydham, an area known locally as Snead. According to Dyfed-Powys Police, a grey Audi A4 and a red Toyota Yaris were involved in the collision.

A blue tractor with a front attachment was also travelling on the same section of road at the time. Early indications suggest that one of the cars may have been in the process of overtaking the agricultural vehicle when the head-on impact with the oncoming car happened.

Victims and emergency response

Tragically, the driver of the Audi A4 and the two occupants of the Toyota Yaris all sustained fatal injuries. The Yaris was being driven by David and Pamela Richardson, both in their late sixties, who had moved from Merseyside to the countryside near the Welsh-English border earlier this year to enjoy their retirement.

A third passenger in the Yaris, believed to be the couple's son, was seriously injured in the crash. He was airlifted to hospital by Air Ambulance for emergency treatment. Specialist officers are supporting the families of all those involved.

Family tribute and police appeal

In a heartfelt statement, the Richardson family said: 'David and Pamela were loving members of our family. They were both very special to us all. David and Pamela had moved to the area earlier this year to enjoy their retirement.'

The family expressed thanks for the support they have received during this 'horrific time' and asked for privacy to grieve.

Dyfed-Powys Police have launched a full investigation into the circumstances of the collision. Officers are urgently appealing for witnesses, including anyone who saw the vehicles prior to the crash or who may have relevant dashcam footage.

Anyone with information is asked to contact the police immediately to assist with the ongoing enquiries.
