Police probe five-car Felling Bypass crash as driver flees

Police are continuing to investigate a five-car collision on the Felling Bypass in Gateshead that left one vehicle flipped onto its roof and saw a driver flee the scene. A woman was taken to hospital following the crash on Monday afternoon, with her injuries not believed to be life-threatening.

Crash details and emergency response

Northumbria Police confirmed on Tuesday that the investigation is ongoing and that no arrests have been made. The cause of the crash has not yet been established, and officers have appealed for witnesses, particularly those with dash-cam footage, to come forward.

A force spokesperson said: "Just before 2.20pm today (Monday), we received a report of a road traffic collision in Gateshead. It was reported that, for reasons yet to be established, five cars had collided in the area of Park Road, which resulted in one of the vehicles turning onto its roof."

Emergency services attended and found one woman, aged in her 40s, had sustained injuries not believed to be life-threatening. She was taken to hospital as a precautionary measure.

Driver flees scene and witness appeal

The spokesperson added: "The driver of one of the vehicles made off from the scene on foot ahead of officers arriving. Enquiries are ongoing to locate them. A section of Park Road is currently closed while the vehicles are being recovered. Road users are advised to seek an alternative route."

A North East Ambulance Service spokesperson said: "We received a call at 2.20pm on Monday 24 August to reports of a road traffic incident on the Felling Bypass near Burlison Gardens, Gateshead. We dispatched an ambulance crew, a clinical team leader, and two crews from our Hazardous Area Response Team (HART) to the scene. One patient was taken to the QE hospital for further treatment."
