The M6 is closed in both directions between junction 23 (Newton Le Willows) and junction 24 (Ashton In Makerfield) in Greater Manchester and Merseyside following a serious crash that sparked a vehicle fire. Long queues are building on the motorway as all emergency services attend the scene.
The road was first shut shortly after 10.20pm on Sunday and remains closed as of 6am on Monday, October 19. Diversion routes are in place for motorists.
Police Investigation Underway
A National Highways spokesperson said: "A Police collision investigation is currently underway and is expected to continue for several further hours. Following completion of the investigation, recovery agents will remove the vehicles involved."
The spokesperson added: "The carriageway road surface will then be assessed for any damage. There is currently no estimated time of when the road will re-open."
Impact on Travel
With the closure in effect overnight and into the morning rush hour, drivers are advised to follow the diversion routes. No reopening time has been confirmed while the investigation and recovery work continue.
