M20 pile-up: 30 vehicles, two seriously injured

More than 30 vehicles were involved in a major pile-up on the M20 in Kent on Saturday evening, leaving two people seriously injured and closing part of the motorway.

Emergency services were called to the London-bound carriageway between junctions eight and nine shortly after 6.40pm. The collision happened in foggy conditions and prompted a large response, with firefighters, paramedics and an air ambulance sent to the scene.

Casualties and response

Kent Police said more than 30 vehicles were involved. Paramedics assessed 11 people, and two casualties with serious injuries were taken to hospital—one to a hospital in Kent and the other to a specialist hospital in London. A number of other motorists and passengers were also injured, though their injuries were not believed to be serious.

Kent Fire and Rescue Service said three fire engines and a technical rescue unit were deployed alongside ambulance crews. National Highways confirmed there had been "thick fog" in the area at the time.

Road closures and investigation

The scale of the collision led to lengthy road closures as crews worked to help those involved and make the motorway safe. The M20 was shut in both directions during the response, allowing access for recovery and evidence gathering. The route reopened later on Sunday after recovery and safety work was completed.

Police have launched inquiries into the circumstances of the crash and are appealing for witnesses, particularly motorists who were in the area shortly before the incident or who have dashboard camera footage. In a statement, Kent Police asked anyone with information to contact the force. Investigations remain ongoing, and no arrests have been reported.
