A learner driver has been charged after a fatal crash outside the Supanova Comic Con & Gaming event at Melbourne Showgrounds. The incident occurred just before 5pm on Saturday when a Toyota sedan mounted the kerb, striking two men.
A 20-year-old man died at the scene, while another man, also aged 20, was seriously injured. A third man managed to avoid the vehicle and escaped unharmed. An off-duty police officer and a member of the public intervened and arrested the driver.
The 33-year-old driver from Werribee was charged on Sunday with dangerous driving causing death and culpable driving. He was unlicensed and held only a learner permit. Police said further charges are expected. He was due to appear before Melbourne Magistrates Court on Sunday afternoon.
Victorian Premier Jacinta Allan described the crash as a 'tragic incident that should never have happened,' expressing condolences to the victim's family. Organisers of the Supanova event held a minute's silence on Sunday, offering their condolences and expressing deep sadness over the tragedy.
